What is Vitiligo?
Vitiligo is a skin condition where patches of skin lose their natural color and turn white.
This happens when the cells responsible for producing pigment — called melanocytes — stop working or die.
While vitiligo is not painful or contagious, it can have a visible impact on appearance and emotional well-being.
What Causes Vitiligo?
The exact cause of vitiligo isn’t fully understood, but it is believed to be an autoimmune condition, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the skin’s own pigment-producing cells.
It may also have a genetic component, meaning it can sometimes run in families.
Other contributing factors may include oxidative stress, injury to the skin, or environmental triggers.
